"Duty and Honour "
Black History Month
Exhibition Questions 2025

This year, as part of our celebrations, we are curating a special exhibition titled “Duty and Honour”, dedicated to men and women from the African and Caribbean diaspora who have served, are currently serving, or who are training in the Armed Forces.

The exhibition will:

  • Celebrate achievements and highlight the contributions of service personnel.

  • Pay tribute to those who have inspired and paved the way for future generations.

  • Inspire young people by showing them real stories and examples of service, reminding them that there is a place for them in this profession.

Building on that success of last year's exhibition honouring midwives and nurses, we're shining that spotlight on the lives and legacies of those in the Armed Forces. The Exhibition will be displayed at the Black History Month Cultural Pop up Market and Workshop Weekend in October and will then make it's way around local schools.

This tribute is both significant and necessary. It connects past and present, honours sacrifice, and ensures that future generations see themselves represented in stories of service, courage, and dedication.

How to Take Part

We would love for you to share your story as part of this exhibition. To do so, we kindly ask you to:

  1. Answer the interview questions provided (open reflections on your journey, challenges, and achievements). Your responses will be used to curate a written story alongside your photos.

  2. Provide 3 photos:

    • In your career – uniform, recruitment, awards, etc.

    • In action – training, barracks, or similar `'at work'.

    • In downtime – current role, new profession, hobbies, personal interests or family life.

    • Keep sake - Something that you treasure from that time which you have speak about in your answers.

Tell me about your life before you joined the Armed Forces - what were your early years like, and what did you imagine your future might hold?

What was it that drew you to the military? Were there particular people, events, or circumstances that inspired you to take that path?

When you think back to your training and early days in uniform, what stands out most clearly in your memory?

What qualities helped you through your career, and what new skills or strengths did you discover in yourself?

How were you received by your peers and superiors at the time? Did you feel welcome straight away, or did that come with time?

Everyone faces challenges in service. Were there particular obstacles - whether racism, sexism, cultural differences, or simply the demands of balancing military life with personal life, that you had to overcome? How did you navigate those moments?

On the other hand, what were your proudest moments? Are there highlights or accomplishments that still make you smile when you think back?

Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn or being stationed in adverse conditions, tell us about it and how you prepared yourself

Do you have a keepsake from your time in service that holds special meaning for you? We’d love to hear the story behind it.

Looking back, in what ways did your time in the Armed Forces change you, mentally, physically, or emotionally? Are there lessons you learned that you still carry with you today?

If you could go back and speak to your younger self before you joined, what advice would you give?

And finally, if you had to sum up your whole experience in just three words, which words would you choose?

Please upload your selected photos
