Black History Month Cultural Pop-Up Market and Workshop Weekend heads to Stevenage

A welcoming weekend celebration of heritage and culture arrives at Westgate Shopping Centre this October
The Black History Month Cultural Pop-Up Market & Workshop Weekend is coming to Stevenage for the first time this October, bringing a lively celebration of culture, community and creativity to Westgate Shopping Centre.
Now in its 4th year, the volunteer-led event has continued to grow through the support of the local community, with visitors asking for more opportunities to come together, discover something new and celebrate Black history and culture.
For 2026, the team at Hatfield Cultural Connection CIC is excited to be working with Westgate One to bring the event to Stevenage for the very first time.
Taking place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026, the free weekend will transform a Westgate unit into a welcoming community space filled with independent stalls, creative activities, exhibitions, live entertainment and more.
The event has also received support from Stevenage Community Trust, whose funding is helping the team provide elements of the weekend’s programme and create activities that the local community can enjoy. This support is helping the volunteer team bring their plans to life and make the event accessible and engaging for visitors.
Visitors will be able to browse a range of handcrafted products and creations from Black-owned independent businesses and makers, meet local community organisations and discover more about the people and stories that have helped shape our communities.
There will also be a themed “Express Yourself” creative corner, where visitors of all ages can get involved in creating their own piece of artwork. The activity is designed to bring people together through creativity, with individual contributions becoming part of a larger community artwork celebrating the diversity of Stevenage.
Live performances will add to the atmosphere throughout the weekend, with opportunities to see singers, musicians, poets and other performers share their talents with the community.
The weekend will also feature an exhibition exploring Black history, achievements and experiences, giving visitors the opportunity to learn, reflect and discover stories from both the past and present. The exhibition has been sponsored through the Black History Month 365 Fund from A2Dominion.
The event is being delivered by a team of volunteers from Hatfield Cultural Connection CIC, who are passionate about creating accessible community events where people can come together, learn from one another and celebrate culture.
“We’ve always wanted to see the event grow year after year,” says the team at Hatfield Cultural Connection CIC.
People have told us they wanted more opportunities to attend, and some have even said they were disappointed that they missed previous events. Bringing the celebration to Stevenage gives us the opportunity to reach a new community and create another welcoming space for people to come together.
“We’re incredibly grateful or sponsors and partnership for supporting the event. As a volunteer-led organisation, support like this makes a real difference and helps us provide activities and experiences that the community can enjoy.”
The team hopes the event will become a regular part of the local calendar and looks forward to welcoming the Stevenage community to Westgate this October.
